Action ReportCame back and redid this exercise a second time after finishing the book, since my first answer was written in a rush. The second version is noticeably more honest — I think I needed to see the rest of the material first to know what I was actually optimizing for.

Action ReportDid this exercise on my commute using the voice memo app instead of writing it down, then transcribed it that evening. Hearing myself say the reason out loud caught two things text alone wouldn't have — I paused before the real answer both times, right after the socially-acceptable one.

Action ReportAnswering this honestly was uncomfortable — my real reason was about proving something to my old manager, not anything healthy. Glad I wrote it down anyway, because seeing it in black and white made it obvious how much of my "productivity" was actually just resentment with a to-do list attached. I'm still working through what a better reason looks like, but at least now I know the old one wasn't it.

Action ReportI finally wrote down the actual reason instead of the vague "be more productive" one. Turns out it's about not missing my kids' bedtime, not about optimizing my calendar. Once I had that written down in plain words, every other decision in the book got easier to make — I stopped treating techniques as equally important and started asking "does this protect the evening or not." That one reframe did more for my week than any of the actual scheduling tricks.
